Much Ado About A Non-Upskirt

The blogosphere is railing against the above image as sexualizing a teenage girl through an upskirt image.

Have these people never been to a high school football game? This is as upskirt as watching the cheerleaders do all their somewhat-acrobatic moves.

But more directly to the superhero costume design: who really thinks of the super-heroine skirt as a true, functional skirt? It is just flair for the costume. What is under the skirt is just as much panties as what Wonder Woman wears or early Robin wore.

Sometimes, I feel like certain folks want to see an offense where there is none, just so they can fire off some righteous indignation.

(FYI: this is the blog that brought the whole thing to my attention)

  1. Righteous, smiteous, I just spanked it. Short skirt + boots = HOT

  2. You must admit, however, that it is a rather... "framed" upskirt, with the lightning and all.

Panty shot or not, it still screams "LOOK! VAGOO!"

  3. I don't know about the vagoo part, but I still think the whole "she's a teenage girl!!!!!1!!" part of the outrage is just silly, as is the attempt to make it an honest-to-goodness skeevy upskirt. The blogosphere brouhaha is trying to amp up the potential degree of perversion to more than can actually be found in reality.

  4. Am I the only one that went "Damn Alex Ross is still the man." Seriously I didn't notice the panty shot till after.

And Ross isn't one to ignore the panties, I mean look at the Gatchaman art he did for the dvd re-release they did a few years back. ( ex: http://www.amazingcomics.it/alex_ross_1.jpg>) Straight up skirt of Swan right there.

  5. At least he gave her panties this time. Unlike that cover painting of Cyclone on Justice Society a while back. HEY! She was a teenager too! OMG, could Alex Ross be a pervert???

  6. It's creepy. If it were a 24 year old supergirl, it'd be creepy too.

The fact that MM is a teenager, though, does make it creepier.

  7. D'oh! How did I miss you commenting here, Asterios?

I think it is debatable, at this point, what MM's age is. But, IMO, it is just as creepy as seeing someone at the beach in a one piece that has trimming made to look like a skirt. YMMV, obviously.
