UPDATE: Well, I Guess I Don't Have A Developing Story Now

From the blog of DC Comics Insider, he reveals a scandal that he came to me with, but didn't run because I wanted to reach out to JG Jones first to get his thoughts.

DCCI has good intentions in putting this out (i.e. to defend JG), but I was concerned about any pain that might have been caused for Mr. Jones by this becoming public knowledge.

Having heard this story from several sources long before, I always felt for JG. But I believe that the person has long been his ex now and, while it is possible that it can still effect him now, it's not likely and even less probable that revealing this will help him at all.

Update: DCCI has sent the following out to an undisclosed group of bloggers (including myself):

Good afternoon.

I suppose you'd like to know who is next?

Well, later this week, we have dirt on Mike Carlin (a bunch of it,
that may concern more than one of you, his fiance, and of course to
DC's HR department!), Joan Hilty, Ivan Cohen, Bob Schreck, and several
others. I'll be naming specific people. We might even examine why very
few people ever get fired from DC. I'll address the lost of some key
editors .... and continue my list of editors who need to leave for how
their lack of moral character has ruined DC Comics.

In the meantime, I'm off to look at the next batch of DC Direct figures!
I'll be referring to him as DCCI, but I somehow get the feeling he'll be labeled DC_b0y.

Wonder Woman Day III: Pt. 3

If you haven't heard, some great Wonder Woman art is being auctioned away to raise money and awareness domestic violence shelters and a women's crisis hotline during Wonder Woman Day III. Online bidding will be open through October 25th at 12am.

During the week, I'll be displaying some of the art being auctioned off on their site to hopefully pique your interest and maybe help send some bids their way.

The "If I Ruled The Comic Industry" Meme

The whole "what I'd do to improve the industry" thing is spreading around, thanks to Tom Spurgeon's post last week. Funny Book Babylon made it the focus of their most recent podcast. Heidi MacDonald adds one to the list (inexplicably skipping to #26, making me compelled to find out if there is a #25 somewhere).

  1. I'd have the major companies test drive new characters via webcomics to find a concept likely to stick in the print market.
  2. Similarly, I'd have the major companies not rush series to an unsatisfactory end, but finish them as webcomics that could possibly be included in a trade paperback offering with several of the last print issues.
  3. I'd end Diamond's virtual monopoly so that competition in the market might lead to improved service (as Diamond can screw up almost weekly for many of its customers, but never suffer from it).
  4. Make POS systems mandatory, with them offered via comic book distributors in a retailer friendly arrangement of some sort.
  5. Street dates for comic books, with the shipment being scheduled to arrive 2-3 business days before, so that shorts and damages have a chance to be resolved in advance of the anxious customers looking for the new release.
Other than the spots where I might have taken one a step further, I pretty much agree with Tom Spurgeon's list or have no cause to disagree. 'Cept on that Cromartie High School thing. Screw that! ;)

JG Jones Is A Class Act

I could think of many reasons why I wouldn't fall on my sword in this situation, like JG Jones just did.

One of the many would be Grant Morrison.

You know, that writer who has practically become a deity to his many fans.

You know, that writer who has needed fill-in artists on BOTH of his events (FINAL CRISIS & BATMAN R.I.P.).

You know, that writer who had delays on 7 SOLDIERS OF VICTORY that are only dwarfed by Kevin Smith's own battles with timeliness.

You know, that writer who is the devourer of lead time and plays matador to the bull of blame & accountability.

Now, I love much of Grant's work. But all signs point to him being the problem with the scheduling of his product. It'd be nice if he step up and admit to that, rather than letting his artist have the target painted only on his back...front...and anywhere people want to slag him.

Last Week At Harrods Approaches...

Rich Johnston dropped a line to mention that the exhibition at Harrods is nearing its final week. Seeing as how get a decent number of hits from the UK, I thought I'd make sure that none of those readers miss the exhibition from not having realized it is still ongoing or that it is ending soon.

COMIC TIMING - Original comic artwork exhibition

8th Sep - 31 28th Oct , MENSWEAR, LOWER GROUND FLOOR

Original comic book artwork used to be thrown away. Considered the off cuts of the comic book industry, they were chopped up, shredded, binned. It took committed individuals and archivists to rescue the foundations of much popular culture for the landfill, for collectors to appreciate their value and now many comic book artists now rely on the sale of the original art boards for a comfortable living. This exhibition is proud to show off some of the finest original comics work by some of Britain's greatest comics creators of the last hundred years. From Dudley Watkins to Frank Quitely, from Posy Simmonds to Jeremy Dennis, from Raymond Briggs to Alan Moore these people have influenced minds both young and old. And now you can see the work, often for the first time, as it was originally created. By pencil, pen and brush. Each one tells a story. But then, isn't that the point?
