Ed Benes gets bagged on a lot lately, for all of his characters looking the same, questionable story-telling, and his propensity for drawing ass and boob shots in so many panels.
It is that last element that we highlight today.
OK...the necessary element might be hard to see at this level of detail. But I think you can see where I'm honing in on here. Right in the foreground...
Either she's got some implants to make her right breast stand up that high or her breasts are so abnormally huge that, even when they settle in due to gravity, they still protrude that much.
Oh yeah...and he still manages to position her for some sort of ass shot. Kudos, Benes...you're a true genius of art...
Mind you, he puts Black Canary in approximately the same position, with only the coloring saving her from being just as exploited.
Hawkgirl has her arm mostly blocking her breasts and her butt isn't quite turned enough to be in play...guess he realized he couldn't play 'em all for titillation. But hey...what's Vixen doing over there? Well, it looks like she's basking in the afterglow...
Most of the men appear to be in more respectful positions. Though, you can debate that with Black Lightning and have to concede a risque pose with John Stewart...

ReplyDeleteComics like that feature both male and female characters drawn with absurdly exaggerated anatomy. Granted the Wonder Woman looks ridiculous, but so does the Superman. You will never see someone that is as massively huge and as well defined as the Superman shown in that illustration.

ReplyDeleteRick: I get what you're saying, but there's an argument that he draws the men more physically dominating and the women more sexualized. One is effective for the type of story-telling involved with super-heroes and the other is meant to cause fanboys to drool and stain their crotches. ;)

Sally: I've always been somewhat partial to the JL/JLI days for many reasons, including Maguire. He'd probably have been a great fit for post-Meltzer JLA.

Wouldn't the metal golden thing push them down, depending on how much it weighs? You can see the material under it and it looks like just Spandex or one of those other swimwear materials...

No, the title of the blog entry is correct. Those have been drawn looking and behaving like implants. Benes' anatomy is so off there's no way he's using photo reference in these images, but from looking at this drawing, I can only think his idea of idealized, heroic figures comes from Maxim and other magazines that truck in pics of surgically enhanced celebrities and models.
Maybe he should try looking at beach volleyball players or tennis pros for inspiration instead of softcore porn or whatever.
