J'Onn Is Dead? Long Live J'Onn!

So...apparently J'Onn is all but confirmed as the hero dying in Final Crisis. He's getting a one-shot from Tomasi and Mahnke to commemorate the event (damn good creative team to pick, btw).

But does anyone think he'll stay dead? We're talking about a death orchestrated by Grant Morrison with a character that has a spiritual connection with fire (H'Ronmeer, God of Death & Fire, I believe). I feel confident that this is part of a plan to reimagine J'Onn to some extent.

If not...don't be surprised if you see me ape the guy who listed reasons why he should write the Legion of Super Heroes and start up my own campaign regarding J'Onn. So much untapped potential in that character.

  1. Kev, as always, this makes sense. But what are you going on, other than a hunch? I read the solicitation, also...

John Jones has been...relatively featured well in the DCU post Infinite Crisis. But you think he's had enough notoriety lately to warrant a "big" death in Final Crisis?

Sure, he's a big player in the DCU, in general. And Grant loved him in the early JLA.

It'd be a tragic death...but meaningless, to me. I'm not saying he hasn't been featured enough lately. Just not front and center. Newer readers might not even know who Martian Manhunter is.

But, he was featured in that villain teaser poster. I don't read Outsiders, so I don't know how that was played up.

Point is, if his death has to happen, let us get one of two things:

His old head back. I don't like the half martian look.

    Or...

    Bloodwynd.

I'm always up for some high quality african-american characters.

Of course, in actuality, he's about as black as Didio's ass...

I guess what we could really hope for is that J'onn turns out to be a Skrull. And that there are no martians, just Skrulls.

And Superman is actually a Skrull. The real Superman will be revealed to have been owned by Marvel the whole time, and awakens after he realizes his head was doused with bleach and accidentally fell into a yellow costume.

I'll buy the Manhunter death issue, nonetheless.

  2. Well, I'm going on a Rich Johnston rumor from a few months back, the solicitations, the fact that one of the revamped villains (the most prominent) is an old J'Onn villain, J'Onn would be the one to die in flames, etc. ;)

  3. You know... Mr. Glaze brings up a point I haven't thought about... just what the hell was that thing with J'onn in that villians teaser anyhoo? Looking back at it, most of the figures in it have been brought into some sort of important storyline... but J'onn really has not... unless we're to count him being trapped on the prison planet with the villains. Maybe he's killed as a result on that?

  4. I think that's the point, Rocky. He's placed in the group of villains as a bit of a Judas or what have you. Catwoman has J'Onn on one side, Joker on the other. Catwoman sold out J'Onn to save herself. Her book is being canceled, so who knows if this means she goes back to full-time villain or dies. Maybe J'Onn chooses not to try to save her (can't see him killing her) due to how she placed him in jeopardy.

  5. Morrison basically admitted J'Onn dies in Final Crisis #1. Interview's at CBR, I think, where Grant talks about revamping an old J'Onn villain the guy getting his revenge in the first issue to kick-start everything.

A link that breaks down that teaser image in accordance to The Last Supper.

Kev, you may have read it already.

It's true about Morrison, but that could also be a red herring.

From what I've heard, WB execs said that no one involved in a movie property can die.

Let's see. Lets think about solo movies, and who's confirmed for Justice League [don't get me started on that.]

    Batman
    Superman
    Wonder Woman
    The Flash
    Green Lantern

...Martian Manhunter isn't going to be in the Justice League movie.

    It's sad, really.

I dunno. And he's not in the original Final Crisis teaser. Hawkman is. Hawkman. Who has two lines of dialogue in the first 10 issues of JSA.

    Sigh.

  7. Well, J'Onn is supposed to be in the Justice League movie last I heard. But he's dying here, for sure. He's going to be back in some manner at some point. Grant has a love for this guy.
