Back a few days ago, I razzed a comic book fan in the Lying in the Gutters forum that he'd know who the creators involved in fights during San Diego Comic Con Internationale were if he followed the right people on Twitter. When he asked why I didn't just share it right then and there, I explained that there was some confusion as to who the instigator was and I wouldn't want to further complicate the creator's situation by alluding to possible guilt when he might be innocent.
Good thing I held back.
Ed Kaye, of the great Hypergeek blog, got to the bottom of the story. While he didn't share the name of the other party involved in the fracas, he contacted the named creator attempted to contact the named creator (Steve Niles), then Googled and got the full story (where Niles was directly quoted). Apparently, it involved someone who regularly attends the con with a pre-existing beef between he and Niles. All signs indicate that Niles was only defending himself. More particulars are available at Hypergeek.
Now, if Mr. Kaye could just dig up the dirt about the alleged barfight involving Darwyn Cooke and a "glassing", we could have the major fight rumors completely wrapped up.

Thanks for the link, I didn't get that straight from Steve though, I read it from http://www.shocktilyoudrop.com, which is why I said "has been quoted as saying". I'm still waiting for him to reply to my message. I imagine he is getting a lot of enquiries right now, so I expect he is ignoring most of them :)
ReplyDeleteI've amended the original article to make that a little clearer. I don't want Steve coming after me with his fists of fury! Hah!
ReplyDeleteFixed, good sir. And hey...I link because I'm not trying to act like I didn't get the info from you. And I subscribe to your blog via RSS.
ReplyDeleteFair enough, it's good to get the traffic :) I try to do the same my self, except for the last glaring oversight there. What can I say, I had to stay 3 hours late at work, then cycle home in the rain. I've not really got my wits about me tonight. Hah!
ReplyDeleteAhh well, time for bed, I have to be up at 6 a.m. for the day job.
Wasn't there something a few years ago involving Niles and some kind of comic professional love triangle? He got involved with someone's significant other?
ReplyDeleteYeah, Rick. The particulars about the timeline aren't clear to me, but I believe the short story was that it got ugly because the other guy was sort of cyber-stalking the new couple and Niles left a violently angry voicemail that the guy put up on his site.
ReplyDeleteThe other guy's longtime girlfriend left him for Niles after he and Niles made tentative talks about a project together.
ReplyDeleteThe Other Guy made progressively embarassing and deranged blog posts about his side of the story and the relationship, and even alleged his GF had been carrying on an affair with another married comics artist behind his back. Niles was going through a divorce at the time the GF left the other guy, IIRC.
He eventually posted the voicemails, and the ex-GF struck back on HER Livejournal alleging all sorts of nasty things, including abuse.
In the end, the cuckold came off the worst, because he just would not shut up about it. Apparently he and Niles did come to an accord.
Dan has it right. I found myself in this same situation ten years ago. I got together with a girl who had a longterm boyfriend. She left him for me, and made life pretty difficult for us. He was a dick, who didn't deserve her. 10 years later we are still together, and are now married.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I got a quote from Rick about the situation, see it here
By the way, he goaded Steve into the voicemail messages, and they were edited.
If it's the same guy, that's just fucking sad. I mean, he made himself look like a complete ass and probably permanently crippled his career over this. You'd think he'd know better, since he's talented.
ReplyDeleteSigns are indicating that is exactly what happened. The guy already screwed up his career with the other actions. And people do incredibly stupid things in the name of love...
ReplyDeleteWhatever that is, I don't think it's love.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but that doesn't apply to whether things are done in the name of love. Bush is doing a lot of stuff in the name of protecting our freedom, for instance...
ReplyDeleteLove makes you lose touch with reality when you're losing the object of your affection. That's where this guy was at some point. Now? Who knows. Love stuff or just ego stuff. Either way, he needs to learn when to let go. I can say that to people now. ;)
Niles was the first name I though of when I heard about a supposed fight.
ReplyDeleteWas the fight between Niles and Dan Slott? (Like Triumph, "I keed, I keed!"
