Punisher War Zone

In light of the revelation that the movie will, indeed, carry an R rating, I'm actually looking forward to this movie again. Especially after viewing the trailer that demonstrates just how much content helped them earn the R.

  1. I'll pass. The plot sounds silly, the cinematography looks more Speed Racer than Punisher ... and I freaking hate Microchip! ;)

  2. Ha, that was pretty gory. I'm glad that they will be bringing Jigsaw into the mix. I think it will be enjoyable enough if you don't take it too seriously, so yeah I think it will be alright. Although I was one of the few who liked the first one mind you.

  3. First meaning Dolph Lundgren or Thomas Jane?

I liked the Jane one, never got around to watching the whole Lundgren one.

  4. The Lundgren Punisher is, surprisingly, not a shitty movie, once you get past the fact that it pretty much ignores the source material & the lack of a skull insignia. It's actually not a half-bad Saturday afternoon action film. The body count is MUCH higher than 2004's Punisher, & the violence is a little more graphic.

The trailer for War Zone looks promising. I'm hopeful that the lack of Microchip in the trailer means his role in the movie is minimized. I like the notion of Castle having an intel/weapons guy, but they made Frank WAY to reliant on 'Chip in the 90s. Dominic West as Jigsaw is money, & the inclusion of so many characters from Ennis' MAX run (Cavella, Ink, & Maginty) is nice to see. Here's hoping it doesn't suck & force Marvel to reboot the character again in a few years.

  5. The fact that it is pulling material from the Ennis run and isn't cutting stuff out to get to a more marketable PG-13 is why I'm going to check it out. I'll try to get to a preview screening so I can report back a bit.

  6. The Ennis MAX Punisher should be considered a textbook on how to write the character effectively. There's plenty of violence & angst, but with enough black comedy mixed in to keep it from being too heavy. If you haven't read it, I can't recommend it enough, but I'm gathering you have already.

  7. I haven't read nearly as much as I should have. Not being a fan of the character, I didn't start reading the Ennis work until my brother moved in for about a year, sometime in late Summer 2006. What I read on the MAX title was damn entertaining, but I haven't gotten around to picking up the prior trades.

I'm going to endeavor to do just that before the movie comes out so I can address it from the angle that most Ennis/Punisher readers would be taking it in from.

  8. Oh the Thomas Jane one Kevin, I wasn't aware of the other one to be honest.

As for older Punisher stories, I'd recommend Ennis & Dillon's 'Welcome Back Frank' 12-part arc that came out under the Marvel Knights banner all those years ago. I think Marvel released a new hardcover of it sometime within the last year.

  9. The "Welcome Back, Frank" arc was a great reintroduction of the Punisher into the Marvel universe, especially after all that "resurrected spirit" business (if you don't know what I'm referencing here, consider yourself lucky.)

Still, the character work Ennis did during his MAX run added so many layers to Castle. It made him a real character, & not just a cookie cutter vigilante.
