Holy Crap! Literally.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sam Mendes (director of Jarhead, Road to Perdition & American Beauty) has been named as the director for the PREACHER feature length film that Columbia just picked up the rights to make.

No writers are attached yet, but Mendes will apparently start the search some time after his new film (Revolution Road) is done with post-production tweaks.

While there have been other stops and starts to Preacher hitting the big or small screen, this might be the best fit creatively and commercially. Here's hope this winds up in a theater near you in a couple years.

FYI: I didn't mean the "crap" in the title in a derogatory way, just as a synonym for "stuff". I would have used "shit", but it seemed a little harsh for a title.

  1. I was VERY excited when it was annouced over a year ago that this was going to be an HBO series and then heard NOTHING about it since. Seeing as this is one of the most thought provoking comics I ever read... I'd like to see this get made... but I honestly think it would MUCH better serve as a cable series (or even an animated series) then a movie... but I will admit the name attached makes me think at least some clout is behind it.

  2. Well, my hope is that they won't try to cram everything into one movie, but put out something compelling that uses maybe the first trade or so.

Mendes hasn't done franchise movies previously, but that wouldn't stop the studio from continuing with another director if the first movie is well-received.
