Uncanny X-Men #500 Variant

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Terry Dodson is tempting me to buy some X books. Not just because of the cheesecake factor of this comic, but because he draws a damn pretty picture in general.

  1. Kitty's chest is the smallest I've ever seen from Dodson. Hey, at least he's changing it up a bit.

  2. Great cover. I love Dodson too and to me there is a subtlety to his cheesecake, it is not full-on T&A like some of the other artists. I would put Alan Davis is the same boat, he is especially good at evoking it too through use of tiny changes in facial expressions.

It is still mind-boggling why they paired the Dodsons up with Greg Land though. Their styles are the complete polar opposite, I guess that will be the acid test for most people.

  3. Yeah...I think that's a pretty good way to sum up the level of his cheesecake. His MK Spider-Man is both where I fell for his work and his work that I've most enjoyed.

But, yeah, I don't see how combining him and Land on a title was the best move. But oh well...

  4. Not really related cheesecake-wise, but I just jumped onto the Ellis-Bianchi Astonishing X-Men, and it's pretty awesome, if you're looking for an excuse to try an x-book.

  5. Oh, I've been on AXM from Day One. Ellis was enough reason to stick around. Bianchi's work isn't coming through as well as I thought it would. The pencils looked better than the finished product, IMO. But I'm still pulling it.

I think that look comes from an old Paul Smith bit circa 1983-4, 'splainin' why Kitty's charms are at ebb tide. Wish I could pinpoint it exactly, 'cos the pose (plus Lockheed) is naggingly familiar. Maybe a Swipe File piece'll be forthcoming...

  7. FYI Astonishing X-Men fell off the schedule only three issues in. It's not in the October Manifest Destiny list.

Now, Bianchi has said repeatedly he gets his work done on time (and that he doesn't like late books either), so this looks to be the fault of Ellis kicking around Alonso yet again. The same Alonso who said the book was going to be on time during the first of the year conventions.
